wonder if構文（「マスケティアーズ」シーズン2より）

wonder if構文のif以下は一見、仮定法が来るように思われますが（ifがあるため）、普通はそうではありません。また、wonder ifのifは「～かどうか」という意味で、仮定法の「～であれば」とは意味が異なります。少しややこしいのでまとめてみました。

下は、「マスケティアーズ」シーズン2、エピソード7の場面です（PowerDVDで英語・日本語字幕同時→画面キャプチャー）。

I wonder if I shall ever see the warm sun of Italy again.
イタリアが恋しくなるわ

余談ですが、女性が話した英語を日本語に訳すと、どうして、ほとんど全部「～わ」「～よ」になってしまうか不思議です。まあ、翻訳だということが分かるというメリットもありますが。

wonder if文を「英文法解説改訂三版」（江川泰一郎著）と「Practical English Usage (3rd)」（Michael Swan著）で探してみました。結果を下にまとめます。

以下、「英文法解説改訂三版」（江川泰一郎著）より

以下、wonder if（現在形）

1. I wonder if my shirt is dry yet. （シャツはもう乾いたかしら）
   ※間接疑問
2. I wonder if we shouldn’t ask (＝should ask) the doctor to look at Mary. （メアリーを医者に診てもらうほうがいいのではないかしら)
   ※驚きや疑いを表すnot
3. I wonder if I could take my coat off. (上着を脱いでもいいでしようか)
   ※許可を求めるのに使われ, Could l…？は Can I. ‥?よりも丁寧
4. I wonder if I might leave now. (もう帰ってよろしいでしょうか)
   ※現在を表すmight。Might I ‥? は Mayｌ‥？よりもさらに控え目な感じになる。
5. He made an apology －I wonder if it was a sincere one －for having caused us so much trouble. (彼は私たちに大きな迷惑をかけたことに対して一心からのものであったかどうかわからないが一応の謝罪をした)
   ※注釈的な文の挿入

以下、am wondering if（現在進行形）

1. I’m still wondering whether/if l should go myself or (l should) send a substitute. (自分で行くべきか代理を出すべきかで，まだ迷っています)

以下、wondered if（過去形）

1. I wondered if she would say yes. (彼女が承知するかしらと思った)
    (＝”Will she say yes? ” l wondered.)
   ※時制の一致による場合。未来の willの過去形になる。

以下、was wondering if（過去進行形）

1. I was wondering if you could give me a hand.
    (ちょっと手を貸していただけるかと思っていたのですが)
   ※丁寧表現。意味が現在で，丁寧な依頼を表す。
   類例（hope）： I was hoping you would give us some advice.
    (あなたに何か助言をいただけるかと思っていたのですが)

以下、if以外（what節など）

1. I wonder what has become of Joe. I haven’t seen him in (= for) weeks. (ショーはどうしたのかしら。もう何週間も会っていない)
   ※前置詞

以下、「Practical English Usage (3rd)」 より

以下、wonder if（現在形）

1. I wonder if she’ll recognize me. (not talking about the present) – We’re going to get a new car.
   ※未来の出来事
2. I wonder if we shouldn’t ask the doctor to look at Mary. (= I wonder if we should ask … ) 
   ※extra negative（余分な否定語）
3. I wonder if I might have a little more cheese. (More natural than Might I have …?)
   ※許可
4. I wonder if I need fill in a form.
   ※法助動詞
5. I wonder if she found anything.
   ※non-affirmative words（非断定語）
6. I wonder if you could (possibly) help me for a few minutes.
   ※丁寧表現
7. I wonder if you could lend me £5?
   ※条件／否定表現

2. I was wondering if you had two single rooms. Will you be going away at the weekend?
   ※婉曲
3. I was wondering if I could do anything to help. (More natural than I was thinking if …)
   ※間接話法

以下、if以外（what節など）

1. I wonder how animals talk to each other. Does anybody know how big the universe is?
2. I wonder who to invite. (= … who I should invite.) Tell us what to do.
3. Didn’t the alarm go off? I wonder what’s wrong with it.
4. I wonder whether I oughtn’t to go and see a doctor – I’m feeling a bit funny. (= … whether I ought to … )
5. I wonder why she should want to go out with me.
