比較級・最上級を強調する語（much、farなど）

下は、映画「アメリカン・アサシン」からの一場面です。PotPlayerで再生し、英語と日本語の両方の字幕を表示し、スナップショットを作成しました。

もっと大きな計画があったのか／計画はもっと大きかったのか？

この場合のagendaは、scheduleの意味です。ここで注目したいのは、even biggerです。bigの比較級に強調のevenが付いた形で、「（比較対象のものも大きいが、それより）さらに／はるかに／ずっと大きい計画」の意味です。

もう1つ、下は「ゴッサム」シーズン4、ディスク5からの場面です。強調語がfarの例です。

比較級と最上級を強調・修飾する語は多数あり、ときどき混乱します。そこで、簡単にまとめてみました。

通常の比較の強調語・修飾語

非公式（口語など）

高いレベルでの比較の強調（～は～大きい／高い／優れているが、～はさらに～だ）

最上級の強調語としては、muchとby farのほか、quite （’absolutely’の意味)、almost、practically、nearly、easilyが使われます（「New 3rd Practical English Usage」より引用。下記の例も同じ）。

※「New 3rd Practical English Usage」はイギリスの書籍ですので、アメリカ英語とは多少傾向が異なるかもしれません。

quite	He’s quite the most stupid man I’ve ever met.
